Surgical Technologists, scrubs, or simply techs are a vital component of almost every surgery. These important individuals and their skill set are often overlooked, yet surgeries cannot be successfully completed without their expertise.
People often think about surgeons and anesthesia as the “Big Dogs” of the operating room, and they regularly get the bright lights.
Well, they are the main component of operating rooms. However, a great portion of their success can be credited to surgical techs or the scrub.
Surgical Tech Duties
The surgical tech is an allied health member who is supervised by the registered nurse or the attending surgeon. They are the individuals that prepare the operating room for surgery. This of course is the most basic of tasks a Scrub will often do. Have you ever seen a show or a movie where the surgeon asks for the scalpel or scissors? Then a team member proceeds to hand the surgeon said instrument. That team member is the surgical tech.
Before a surgery, the attending surgeon will create a preference card. The scrub must know how to read this card accurately because it contains what the surgeon needs and wants for a surgery. It will have a list of items like glove size, suture type, or special equipment etc…
A surgical tech can expect to prepare a back table and a mayo stand equipped with the adequate instruments for surgery. This all has to be done in a timely manner, so the surgeon can arrive and proceed with surgery quickly. These instruments will include items such as clamps, forceps, local anesthesia, scissors etc.. This all changes depending on the type of surgery. The scrub is also expected to gown and glove the surgeon. Counting and keeping track of all instruments on the field can pose one of the most difficult tasks. In addition to keeping a sterile field. A surgical tech is often judged by his or her surgical conscience or aseptic technique.
